Reflection

The first major assignment was the "Where I'm From Hometown Narrative" essay. We were all supposed to tell a little bit about our hometown. When we were given this assignment my mind went straight to our football team, but I needed a way to tie my own experience into that. I thought there was no better way than to talk about me cheering at the football games, and what lead up to me being a cheerleader at Bryant high school. I thought this experience would be perfect for this assignment because when most people talk about Bryant, my hometown, they talk about our football team. I really enjoyed this assignment because I got to tell my classmates a little bit about me, and I got to know a little bit about them. It was definitely a great way to get to know my classmates better at the beginning of the year.

The second major assignment was the "Ad Analysis." In this assignment we were supposed to pick an ad and show how they used ethos, logos or pathos. When I was first looking for an ad I searched around for a little bit then saw this bright pink ad. It caught my eye right away. This assignment was one of my favorites, because it showed how companies are using certain things to convince you to buy their products.

The last major assignment was the "Protest Song Argument" essay. In the assignment we were supposed to find a protest song and write about what they were protesting. For a while I struggled with finding a good protest song. Then I decided to go through the list that Mrs. Nall had given us and watch the music videos to them. This songs music video really stuck out to me. It was entertaining and really got the point of the protest across.

My favorite Comp Review assignment was definitely “Serena Williams’ Tennis Outfits Defy the Norms Female Athletes Face” reading response. This was a very entertaining piece. We read about Serena Williams and how woman were only allowed to wear certain things while playing a sport. Even If it was harder to play the sport in those certain outfits. I feel like I could connect to this piece personally because it talked about when the girls played baseball, they had to wear really long skirts. I’ve played softball my whole life and couldn’t imagine having to play in a long skirt.

Learning Outcomes (Comp 1)

1.    I learned how to appropriately respond to various rhetorical situations, purposes, and audiences. I got a lot of constructive feedback on all my assignments that really helped me grow as I writer. I learned about the topic by reading the articles and I learned that I need to reread articles sometimes to fully understand it.

2.    I learned to use writing and reading for inquiry, learning, thinking, and communicating. While doing all the writing assignments I learned different things. The “serena Williams’ Tennis Outfits Defy the Norms Female Athletes Face” really stood out to me as one of the ones I learned the most about. It taught me about the history of woman and sports. It also taught me to be grateful for the opportunities I have today.

3.    I learned how to Integrate original ideas with those of others. I believe that woman and men are not treated equally. In the “Protest Song Argument” I wrote about the song “The Man” by Taylor Swift and you can see that we felt the same way. She wrote about the double standards between men and women, and I realized that we had the same ideas about the subject and that I could write about that.

4.    I learned to develop flexible strategies for generating, revising, editing, and proofreading. In the begging I really struggled with my grammar. I would write things that just wouldn’t make sense sometimes. Especially in my Protest Song Argument when I was trying to describe the music video. I learned how important it was to proofread and edit your pieces.

5.    I learned to use collaborative writing processes. Since I struggle with my grammar. I learned to let someone else like my dad read my essays before turning them in. I had quite a few spelling errors in my hometown narrative at first, but after he read over it. I fixed many of them.

6.    I learned how to demonstrate knowledge of structure, paragraphing, tone, mechanics, syntax, grammar, and documentation. Structure is very important in an essay. I demonstrated good structure in my hometown narrative. I started it with a dream I had then led into what got me to accomplish my dream.

Learning Outcomes (Composition Review)

1.  I learned to demonstrate an awareness of usage and mechanics through developing and revising compositions. I have a 97% in my composition review class which lets me know that I do a good job when it comes to developing and revising compositions.

2. I learned to demonstrate critical thinking skills by reading texts in various genres and responding and developing compositions. I never had a problem with expressing how I felt in our reading response. I love talking about topics I know about and expressing my feelings.

3. I learned to develop a variety of strategies for generating text and for revising. I usually started with the questions given to us by the instructor. Then I would go back and revise what I wrote.

4. I will reflect through a final portfolio demonstrating an understanding of purpose, audience, and usage/style. I wrote about the importance of proof reading, revising, and a lot more in the portfolio.

Strengths and Challenges

I feel like my strengths in my writing is being able to express how I feel and go into detail about my opinion on the topics. My main challenge was my grammar. Sometimes I wouldn’t spell things correctly or word things correctly. That is why proof reading is so important.

Overall Benefit

Overall, this class has really helped me become a better writer. It helped me with my grammar and expressing my opinion about a piece. I’m prepared for my comp 2 class and for my future writings.
